Abstract
This system provides a robust and refinable method for sizing and forecasting product
market data by geographic regions and sub-regions in a way consistent with accepted
national, international and worldwide market sizes. This system and method is useful in
any environment where careful definition of input data and consistency of output data are
critical. The system can adjust all market size data by comparing reported and calculated
values and recomputing all calculated values while maintaining integrity with the total
market size. The system and method also provide a means of consistently calculating total
industry size.
Background
This system was conceived in early 1995 to fill a need for sub-regional market data and
to track key aspects of the excessive information available related of market size. The
system applies engineering rigor to market analysis to produce consistent, reliable,
refinable sub-regional market data. The system is a tool for individuals analyzing rapidly
changing industries and product mixes as well as forecasting future market sizes. It can
also be used to compare reported and calculated values and adjust allocated market sizes
based on actual market sizes.
The system is ideally suited to large worldwide industries such as
telecommunications and power, especially those industries experiencing deregulation where
initial market conditions are known. There are five market dimensions in the system:
- Time
- Product
- Market Segment
- Geography
- Service Provider / Vendor
System outputs are available in user-selectable combinations of these
dimensions.
The first implementation of this system and method is for the telecommunications
industry in the United States. This implementation is collectively referred to as and provides a means of reliably calculating the total service revenues for this
industry.
Industry-specific regional market size data is input to the system. The system can
preserve the integrity of accepted national market sizes while providing previously
unavailable sub-regional market sizes. Finally, the system accommodates post-processing of
the output data allowing access in multiple formats and through multiple electronic means.
Figure 1 shows the relationship of these elements. The following description of the system
details each of these areas.
